Safety Tips
Last updated: October 5, 2026
SugarMingle Extra is used in every part of the world, and dating norms, laws and risks differ enormously between them. The advice below is written to hold up wherever you are. Read it as a floor, not a ceiling: local knowledge always beats general guidance.
1. Before you meet
- Move slowly. Anyone pressing you to leave the app, switch to another messenger, or meet immediately is showing you something about themselves.
- Video call first. It is the single most effective check against someone using photographs that are not theirs.
- Search their photos. A reverse image search takes seconds and catches most stolen pictures.
- Keep conversations on the platform until you trust them. We can only help with what we can see.
2. Meeting in person
- Meet in public, the first several times. A cafe, a restaurant, somewhere with staff and other people.
- Arrange your own transport, both ways. Never rely on a person you have just met to get you home.
- Tell someone. Share who you are meeting, where, and when you expect to be back.
- Stay in charge of your drink and your belongings.
- Leave whenever you want to. You do not owe anyone an explanation, an apology, or more of your evening.
3. Protecting your money
Romance fraud is the most common serious harm on dating platforms anywhere in the world, and it does not look like fraud while it is happening. It looks like someone who understands you.
- Never send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency or bank details to someone you met online. There is no exception to this that is worth the risk.
- Be sceptical of emergencies: a stranded traveller, a customs fee, a medical bill, a business that needs one last payment.
- Refuse investment advice from a match, however credible it sounds. This is now one of the most common forms of the scam.
- We will never ask you for your password, and we will never ask you to move a payment off the platform.
4. Protecting your information
- Keep your home address, workplace, daily routine and financial details private until trust is genuinely earned.
- Be careful with photos that reveal where you live, work or study, including reflections, street signs and uniforms.
- Use a strong password you do not use anywhere else.
5. Intimate images
Sharing intimate images is your decision. If you make it, be aware that a screenshot cannot be recalled, and that threatening to share such images is a crime in many countries. If someone is threatening you, do not pay them. Report it to us and to your local police. Paying almost always leads to further demands.
6. If you are LGBTQ+
Same-sex relationships are criminalised in a number of countries, and enforcement sometimes involves dating apps directly. If you are in or travelling to such a place, consider carefully what you put in your profile, use the privacy controls available to you, and take extra care arranging first meetings. Your safety comes before completeness of your profile.
7. Reporting
Report anyone who makes you uncomfortable. You do not need proof and you do not need to be certain. Reports are confidential, and the person you report is not told who reported them.
- Use the report control on any profile, conversation or photo.
- Blocking is immediate and stops all contact from that account.
- If you are in danger, contact your local emergency services first. We are not an emergency service and cannot reach you quickly enough.
